Choose Marriage

Totally Random post today, but still important. I’m taking a break from social media (just for a few hours). Although I wonder if it’s still a “break” when I’m actively writing a blog post. Oh well, whatever.

I came upon this synopsis of the Jon and Kate Plus 8 separation announcement episode by Sarah Kelber on the Reality Check blog. This quote really hit me: “Jon says that he is ‘hurt and excited’ about the new chapter in his life… Kate says it will be strange because she will have days where she can’t be around them [the kids].”

“NO!” I wanted to scream (not at Sarah, at Jon and Kate). “You can’t give up. You HAVE to fight for marriage. I know it seems bleak, but don’t give up.”

That’s the thing about marriage, it’s our CHOICE. Of course it’s a choice, you always have a choice. But at some point, when things get bad, really bad, so bad that the full force of that commitment you made hits you so hard you want to drop to your knees and cry, that’s when you realize you can end this pain by walking away. Then you have a choice: break your commitment or honor your commitment. That’s the hard part. In the midst of those tears, standing up and saying, “As hard as this is, I still choose this. I choose marriage. I choose you. I choose to honor this covenant.”

That’s really what it comes down to, because let’s face it, we entered into a covenant that day at the altar with our sweetheart. I know it sounds unromantic, but first and foremost we made a promise, are we going to keep it or not? Are we going to walk away and end the marriage, or stay and trust a powerful God to do the unimaginable between us? Choose marriage.

I don’t normally pray for random reality celebrities whose show I don’t even watch, but what if we all pray for Jon and Kate, their marriage, and their children? What if we pray and God hears us? What if we pray and He answers? Wouldn’t that be awesome?
